As one of the country?s most experienced coaches. Damian McGrath has a wealth of knowledge at his disposal. He has coached successfully at club and international level in both Rugby League and Rugby Union, as well as writing several publications, lecturing worldwide and producing several Videos and DVDs. As a graduate teacher he has always taken a thoughtful and innovative approach throughout his sporting life.
After a career as a professional Rugby League player he coached throughout the 1990s at the Leeds Rhinos. He began as the clubs? first ever Academy Coach and laid the foundations for what has become the sports? most successful junior and youth set-up. He coached both the Academy and Reserve teams before being elevated to Assistant 1st Team Coach, where he enjoyed Wembley success in the Challenge Cup and helped steer the club to a Grand Final at Old Trafford.
Whilst at the Rhinos he coached the Great Britain Academy RL team, Great Britain U21s RL team, Super League U21s team and the Yorkshire Academy RL team.
In 1998 he was appointed to the Senior National team and held that position with the England team in the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.
In 2001 he was approached by the RFU to join their elite Coaching Panel.
He was appointed Defence Coach for England 'A' and the Skills and Defence Coach for the England 7s team. The following year the England 7s team became the first Northern Hemisphere team to win the prestigious and world famous Hong Kong 7s and they finished 4th in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
During the next two seasons Damian shared his England duties with a role as 1st Team Skills Coach at Leicester Tigers.
On returning full time to the RFU, Damien toured on two Churchill Cup tours with England 'A' and continued with England 7s who won numerous titles, appeared in the Sevens World Cup and went on to win a record 4 consecutive Hong Kong titles.
In 2004 he coached the England Junior 7s to a Silver Medal at the Junior Commonwealth Games in Australia, followed by coaching the England U19s to 3rd place (their highest ever finish) in the fifteen-a-side U19 World Cup in Dubai.
Alongside this practical experience Damian has lectured worldwide on rugby skills.
After a spell as assistant coach at Harlequins RLFC Damian is now Managing Director of Skillstation International td (a schools multi-skill coaching company) and a Performance Consultant with the Edge 2 Performance Ltd.
