Reviews:

This is a refreshing, dynamic approach to the subject, with lively illustrations by Paul Flynn and 22 original and varied CD tracks specially composed by Andrew McIntyre. All criteria of the PE National Curriculum 2000 are incorporated and a tick chart appears at the beginning of the book to indicate where each element is covered.

I think that the programme could provide support for both specialists and non-specialists. Effective teaching strategies are outlined as well as guidelines for assessment and reward resources. There are even some activity sheets at the back of the manual.

The pack is presented in a narrative form, supplemented by 37 flashcards showing such colourful characters as Heidi Hips, Mr Motion, Mick Energy and Shelley Shoulders. Plenty of opportunities are provided for imaginative adventure, creativity, performance and evaluation. Instructions are clear and detailed, with numerous suggestions for questioning and specific techniques.

I found that a few minutes’ preparation was usually sufficient to familiarise myself with each item, although I sometimes needed a little practice to get my timing coordinated with the music; I thought it a shame that some of the pieces weren’t longer!

My year one class really enjoyed the narrative aspect and responded enthusiastically to the characters; the format seemed particularly relevant as they had recently been introduced to simple graphic notation in music. I quote a few of their comments:

“The stories are fun”,

“I think the names are funny”

"I like doing what the picturs say"

"The music is cool"

This is an extremely valuable and accessible resource which offers a wealth of innovative practical and theoretical ideas. Dance in Steps fills a gap in schools' provision of Dance at this level
