Overview:

The benefits of safe and regular physical activity on health are now globally accepted. Benefits accrue from various types of exercise in a large range of settings such as sports centres, play areas, safe walkways and cycle paths, and more recently, fitness gyms. These settings are increasing in number and are now available to all, from young to old.

The BASES guidelines on the safety and effectiveness of resistance exercise for young people were a result of these deliberations and, as such, should be adhered to by all those involved in resistance exercise contexts with this age group.

These guidelines aim to inform teachers, parents, coaches, health professionals, local authorities and the medical profession about the risks and benefits of resistance exercise in 5-18-year-olds.

Contents:
  • Introduction to resistance exercise and young athletes,
Glossary of terms in resistance exercise,
    Guidelines for professional practice,
    Scientific support
    Useful contacts
