    Foreword
Wimbledon is as integral to the British summer as rain on bank holidays. The historic tournament is a wonderful showcase for tennis, but there is so much more to the sport. The sport has a wide, enthusiastic and loyal following and British players are supported in competitions like the Davis and Fed cups, as well as local tournaments. These opportunities contribute to bringing the game to all those interested in the sport, illustrating to them the excitement and challenge tennis can bring to their lives, whether participating as a player, coach, umpire or just a supporter.

Whether you want to play or watch, Understanding Tennis will take you to the heart of the game, no matter what your level of experience when you begin. You can start by testing your tennis knowledge, then go in-depth. Understanding Tennis is laid out in clear, concise sections that offer something for everyone. If you are interested in the history of the game, the book describes how tennis has developed through the ages up to the present day, and profiles of the world's most famous players sketch the characters who have made today's sport what it is. If you want to step over the chalk lines, Understanding Tennis also provides guidance on starting out in playing, with a summary of the essential components required for a tennis match and the basic laws by which the sport is governed. As the former British number 5, I have been fortunate to play tennis to a professional level and to step onto the hallowed courts of Wimbledon, and now coach at grass-roots and county level. With the current interest, generated by the passion of Andy Murray, many youngsters are beginning to take more interest in this fun and sociable game. In Understanding Tennis, these newcomers have the perfect foundation - a book to whet their appetites and guide them on the path to success. I hope that the game continues to prosper, attracting young people who will play and follow the game with passion, verve and good sportsmanship.
